Participation Guidelines, Rules & Regulations 

nssm_logoParticipation Guidelines, Rules & Regulations are as follows:

  1. The competition is open to citizens of Trinidad and Tobago attending Primary and Secondary schools (Government/Private) as well as all persons between the ages of 6-19 years.
  2. There is no limit to the number of students from any one school permitted to enter the competition.
  3. There are two categories of the competition as follows:
    • Junior Category
    • Senior Category
  4. Contestants entering the junior category must be attending a primary school or be between the ages of 6-11 years.
  5. Contestants entering the senior category must be attending a secondary school or be between the ages of 12- 19 years.
  6. Backup singers and dancers in the junior category must not be over 11 years of age and similarly backup singers and dancers in the senior category must not be over 19 years of age.
  7. Contestants must have an instrumental CD to accompany the lead singer at the preliminary stage (without their voice). Backup vocals are permitted on the CD.
  8. Contestants will be disquali ed if their rendition is deemed inappropriate either through characterisation, lyrics and body language or display signs.
  9. No re products or other incendiary props are allowed.
  10. No adult support or accompaniment is allowed without prior permission.
  11. The crowding of the restricted backstage area with supporters will not be permitted.
  12. The judging criteria for both the junior and senior categories are as follows:
    • (Melody): Suitability/Appropriateness /Phrasing [25Pts.]
    • (Rendition): Intonation/Clarity of Diction/Enunciation/Articulation [20Pts.]
    • (Lyrics): Creativity/Descriptiveness/Metering/Rhyming SchemeClarity of Message/Thematic Development [25Pts.]
    • (Arrangements): Musical Acc/Soca Genre or Idiom Soca Form [15Pts.]
    • (Performance): Visual Impact/Body Language Use of Stage/Use of props etc. [15pts.]
  13. Contestants must report to the Stage Manager at least one (1) hour before his/her scheduled performance or shall be considered late and will receive a 10 point deduction.
  1. Contestants must sing in the positions picked prior to the nals or will receive a 5 point deduction.
  2. Contestants are permitted to have no more than ten (10) persons on stage as support during their performance. The 10 person limit will be speci c to the Preliminary & Semi-Final rounds. There will be no limit to supporting cast for the Finals.
  3. Contestants must ensure that all supporting performers/props etc. must be out of the restricted back stage area immediately after their performance.
  4. Contestants are allowed to bring their own refreshments. Please note, no glass bottles are allowed.
  5. Contestants who incite violence i.e. throwing of missiles or damaging the facilities, or any such act, will be disquali ed and reported to the relevant authorities.
  6. Contestants shall make themselves available for live audio and visual broadcast, delayed broadcast as promotional material directly related to the competition.
  7. The song should be no more than ve (5) minutes long and no less than 3 minutes.
  8. The length of time spent on the stage should not exceed seven (7) minutes maximum.
  9. Pre-recorded music for the Semi- nal competition, according to guidelines in Number 7, is the responsibility of each artiste.
  10. Competition deadlines must be respected, no entries will be accepted after the registration deadline.
  11. School Principals must sign the registration form of each participant that belong to said school.
  12. Parent/Teacher must sign the registration form for persons between the ages of 6-17 years and participating in the competition.
  13. Participants between the ages of 18 -19 are allowed to sign the form without parents’ consent.
  14. Contestants, parents and supporters found using obscene language or in appropriate behavior will be disquali ed and barred from entering the competition for a minimum of two (2) years after a rst offence. The school of the participant will also be informed by a way of of cial CPF correspondence.
  15. The results and adjudicators’ decision are nal. Persons are encouraged to accept the results and respond in a responsible manner.
